At Dresden Residenzschloss, the Riesensaal presents selected suits of armour, ceremonial weapons, and costumes. For this project, Sehner Precision Display Cases developed large-scale and all-glass display cases with integrated climate and lighting technology.
Dresden, Germany
At 57 metres long and 13 metres wide, the Riesensaal provides the setting for around 350 exhibits from the 15th to the 17th centuries. The display cases combine conservation requirements with the architectural scale of the hall. Large-scale cases, all-glass solutions, and specially developed plinth constructions were precisely tailored to the space and the objects. Extra-white, anti-reflective 16 mm safety glass, fibre-optic lighting, and integrated climate technology ensure transparency, stability, and optimal conditions.

MONUMENTAL SCALE, PRECISION
01
MONUMENTAL SPATIAL DIMENSIONS
The scale of the Riesensaal required display case solutions that integrate seamlessly into the space while combining structural stability with visual lightness.
02
HIGH LOAD CAPACITY
Individual display case doors weighing up to 280 kg had to be engineered for safe guidance and long-term reliable movement.
03
CONCEALED OBJECT FIXING
Armour, horse figures, and weapons had to be securely anchored while keeping all fixing elements visually concealed.
04
CONSERVATION REQUIREMENTS
Material safety, tested airtightness, and a controlled microclimate were essential for the long-term protection of the objects.
Challenges
01
MINIMAL HINGE SYSTEM
A concealed minimal hinge within the plinth carries the full weight of the up to 280 kg heavy doors. The upper guidance is provided solely through a pivot point.
02
Klimatisierte Großvitrinen
The display cases were constructed to high technical standards and equipped with integrated climate technology, tested for airtightness and low emissions.
03
ANTI-REFLECTIVE SAFETY GLASS
16 mm special glass creates a near-invisible enclosure for the exhibits while ensuring maximum visual clarity and an exceptionally unobstructed view.
04
INTEGRATED PLINTH CONSTRUCTION
Display cases over 3.5 metres high feature extendable inner plinths. Horses and armour are statically secured without visible fixings.

Advantages
PRECISION
Construction and execution were carried out to the highest technical standards in museum fabrication.
Load-bearing systems, hinges, and fixings remain concealed and support the visual calm of the presentation.
MECHANICS
RESTRAINT
Materiality, glass quality, and light guidance create a presentation that places the objects at the center.
Tested airtightness, low-emission materials, and controlled climate guidance provide lasting protection for sensitive exhibits.
